Apparently Google is using Global IP Sound for it's telephony service (It says this in the "About" section"). The interesting thing is that I've heard that Skype and MSN Messenger also use Global IP Sound. I wonder whether this is just for the beta or whether they're sticking with the same tech as some of the other services. I guess this could help compatibility, but it makes it less unique, and isn't Google all about being unique?

Well, they say "Google Talk supports the following standard voice codecs: PCMA, PCMU, G.723, iLBC. [They] are also evaluating the Speex codec." At the same time, GTalk can and does "support codecs from Global IP Sound: ISAC, IPCMWB, EG711U, EG711A" - emphasis on supports. The idea here is they're probably using it primarily for compatibility reasons. Of course, I might be wrong...
